Members of the month Heather and Nick
How long have you been doing crossfit?
N – I started crossfit on September 1, 2010. I was at a Mexican restaurant in South Boston when I saw a flyer for a crossfit gym that was scheduled to open in November. When I got home I searched for a crossfit near my work in Waltham, found CFN and emailed Gil and Jodie on August 31. I started onramp the following day.
H – A little over a year
How long have you been at CFN?
N – Three and a half years.
H – Almost a year. This June will be one year with CFN.
Do you remember the first day you walked into CFN? What wod did you do and how did you feel?
N – I remember walking into the gym for my on ramp course with John McEvoy and seeing Jay Yoon and Greyson doing heavy deadlifts and Greyson was screaming. I remember thinking, “Yikes”. There were two others in my on ramp course and we did the baseline WOD. This was at Felton Street before the pull up bars had been installed so we substituted ring rows.
H – I do remember the first day! I don’t remember the specific WOD, but I do remember being nervous because I had just run a marathon and was getting over shin splints and couldn’t run or jump at the time. I was worried that the coaches would be annoyed that I had to modify the workouts, but everyone was very encouraging and happy to help me make friends with the Airdyne and rowing machine. I also remember being impressed with how many strong women were lifting heavy weights.
What is your favorite lift/movement?
N – Favorite lift is snatch. I really like overhead squats in WODs which is surprising because when I started crossfit I couldn’t squat with a PVC pipe overhead for the first few months. I like doing all of the gymnastic movements as well.
H – Deadlift! Because I feel strong!
What is your favorite wod?
N – Favorite WOD would be Diane.
H – Any WOD that includes deadlifts or sled push.
What is your least favorite lift/movement?
N – Sumo deadlift high pulls, wall balls, rowing
H – Snatch
What is your least favorite wod?
N – Anything that would involve all three of the movements above!
H – Jumping is my kryptonite because I have bad ankles from repetitive roller derby injuries. I dread WODs that include jumping or jump rope so I try to force myself to go on those days anyway.
What accomplishments have you had since you have been a member of CrossFit Newton?
N – In addition to being much stronger and fitter I have become more conscious and knowledgeable about nutrition and try to eat only responsibly raised meat and fish while following a paleo-ish diet.
H – A couple of months ago I decided I wanted to get good at pull ups so I asked Michele Barbone for some extra coaching and then I started working on pull ups 3 or 4 times a week before or after WODs. Over the course of a couple of months I went from the black band and not knowing how to do kipping pull ups at all to being able to (just yesterday) do pull ups with the red band only. I also found out a couple of weeks ago that I can do toes to bar! I can see so much progress, I feel much stronger, and all of that helps my confidence
What are you goals for the future?
N – Continue to get stronger. Over the next year I would like to snatch 225 and clean 300. I have a long way to go (current PRs are 190/270) but I know it is possible.
H – I’m going to keep working pull ups until I can do them without a band. Then I will probably pick a new movement to focus on – maybe double unders – I could confront my jumping dread.
Thank you guys for being a part of the CrossFit Newton family and trusting us with your fitness. You have both become a big part of this community.

OK Everyone, The Paleo challenge is almost over. I’m sure a lot of you are happy. I hope you have all learned a little bit about yourselves and how your body reacts to having certain foods or not having certain foods. Most of all I hope you guys had a good experience. I’m not looking for you all to stay on Paleo for the rest of your life. Just do what makes you feel the best and helps you perform and recover well. I am posting this today for people who would like to do the paleo WOD today. You may also do this WOD tomorrow if you’d like. Also, please bring in your measurement changes from the start of the challenge till now.
